Maundy Thursday...at Trinity Lime Rock
On the night Jesus was betrayed he shared a meal with his friends and followers. In the Synoptic Gospels it appears to have been a Passover meal or a Haburah meal, which was a religious dinner eaten by a group of men. However, in the Gospel according to John, the Passover was not until the next day, thus indicating that Jesus himself was the Passover meal, the lamb that was slain. In any event, Jesus gave to the meal an entirely new significance -- one which would only become clear after His death.
It's longstanding tradition in our parish to commemorate Christ's Last Supper with the solemn observance of Holy Eucharist with the ancient rite of foot washing. The ringing of the Trinity Church bell ceases after summoning the worshippers to the Maundy Thursday service.
During the last hymn of the liturgy for Maundy Thursday, following Holy Eucharist, the Altar is stripped, the Sacrament is removed from the Aumbrey, and the Sanctus Lamp is extinguished.
There is no dismissal after this service, nor will there be any until the end of the Easter Vigil, indicating that the celebration of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter are one service, spread over three days. Likewise there is no postlude. All depart in silence. Following Maundy Thursday liturgy the next liturgical event at Trinity is the Good Friday Liturgy.
