Our Sunday School's
FLOWER
GARDEN
UPDATE: the original
Sunday School garden did not make it through
our expansion. If you check some of the construction pictures, you'll see
why. However, each Spring, a few of the flowers still bravely poke up
their heads on the site of the original garden.
Beginning in the Autumn of 2004, our
Trinity Kids began deciding just what the new
garden should look like and drawing up a plan. (St. Francis had waited out
the construction in the garage, and once the addition was completed,
he moved into a place in one of the windows, where he oversaw the planning
process.)
Finally, in late October, the Trinity Kids were
ready to create a new garden. (Our Sunday Schoo Director had
thoughtfully prepared the soil
in the new location.)
On October 24, the kids planted the new
garden. Here are some pictures from that day! (We've kept some photos of
the old garden at the end of this page for those who might want to remember what
it looked like.)

The new garden -- before! |

"Let's get started!" |

"I think we should do this corner first." |

"Of course you need to press the dirt down!" |

Some technical assistance |

Developing supervisory skills |

"I think I've planted enough for one day!" |

"But that's what the plan said!" |

"Well, let's see what comes up next Spring!" |
We waited for Spring, and
during the Summer our "supervisor" at the initial planting put in some
additional work on her own! |

And here's the finished product on September
25, 2005. |
During our
Summer Soccer program,
we usually meet at the Flower Garden to say the Lord's Prayer before we move out
into the field for soccer.

History of the Sunday School's Flower Garden:
Here it was in the Spring of
2001

p.s. That's St. Francis -- in case you
were wondering!
Well, even though we forgot to
take care of the garden for quite a few months, we came back and checked on it
anyway in the Spring of 2002. We were all disappointed that there wasn't more left to see -- no
flowers to speak of, just weeds. St. Francis was still there, but even the
stones that outlined the garden had sunk into the ground. We were all
really surprised at how fast it had happened.
This discovery didn't make
the kids particularly happy, even though it was nice to get outside in our backyard again. We dug and dug
where we had planted the garden, and we found a few bulbs, but not taking care of the
garden and expecting it to take care of itself just hadn't worked out!! We
learned something about Stewardship -- that is, taking care of what God has
given us -- in the process. Click on any of the
pictures to see them full-sized!
