Confirmation for Young People at Trinity Lime Rock

Confirmation Class 2003

During the 2002-03 school year, Parishioner Tom Schindler, a former scientist who now teaches science at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, and the Rector met with our class of seven on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

The class included Bible reading, followed by discussion among the Confirmands of the passage read, in the format known as "African Bible Study."  Supper followed.  Frequently a parent of a Confirmand  prepared a quick pasta and salad supper in the parish kitchen, but sometimes pizza was ordered in.  While the class ate, the Rector instructed or led a discussion about a topic relevant both to Confirmation in the church, and to the Confirmands themselves, with the other instructor providing a lay view of the subject matter.

Compline begins

Just before 8 p.m. each evening, the Confirmands and the teachers went into the sanctuary for Compline.  This rite, which takes only a few moments, served as a reminder of the reasons that the class met.  On occasion, the Compline liturgy from other countries was used.  (The order from the New Zealand Prayer Book was a particular favorite of this class.)

On Sunday, the Confirmands usually attended the entire Holy Eucharist, but sometimes assisted in the Sunday School or took other parts in the day's activities, such as preparing for and hosting the coffee hour after the service.

When May comes, Confirmation for all of the parishes in the Litchfield Deanery takes place at a central location in Litchfield County.  In 2003, Confirmation took place at St. Michael's Church, Litchfield. Bishop Smith presided, and 49 young adults (and some older adults, too) were Baptized, Confirmed, or Received.  The parishes represented were:  St. Paul's, Bantam; Christ Church, Bethlehem; St. Mark's, Bridgewater; Christ Church, Canaan; All Saints', Cornwall; St. Andrew's, Kent; Trinity, Lime Rock; St. Michael's, Litchfield; St. Andrew's, Marbledale; Trinity, Milton; St. Paul's, Southington; Trinity, Torrington; St. John's, Washington; and St. James', Winsted.  The class (and the families and spectators attending from Trinity Lime Rock) were pleased to hear our own Christine Gevert play the Preludes.

The next day, Sunday, May 18, the Trinity family welcomed our new Confirmands at the 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist, in which the new Confirmands participated: as readers, ushers, acolytes, and intercessors.
