| At the suggestion of parishioner Jane
Canfield, in 2007 the parish determined to dedicate a Sunday to honoring the
volunteers in our communities who respond first in the face of danger or
disaster. We did it again in 2008,
and then again in 2010
-- and we know that our first responders appreciated it. But then we realized that something we were doing to honor
and support our first
responders was actually creating a greater burden
for them. We came to realize that when they brought their apparatus to us to be
blessed, it necessitated time and energy back at the firehouse or ambulance
garage cleaning and making the vehicles and gear ready for the next emergency.
We're now investigating other ways that we can
support our first responders that will add value for them. We're thinking
about emergency feeding, for example -- something as simple as bringing pizza
when our firefighters or EMTs have been deployed for several hours, and missed
meals and hard work are beginning to take a toll.
We know that we need to honor and thank these people -- and the
group includes a number of our own parishioners -- and that that's the very least that we can
do in view of the sacrifice they all make. But we do want to do more.
We're open to suggestions!! Speak with Pastor Heidi or any member of
the Vestry with your ideas.
