History: June 15, 2003 at Trinity Lime Rock

The Church that iron built......

June 15, 2003 was an historic day in the life of Trinity Lime Rock.

It being Trinity Sunday, of course it was our official Parish Birthday.  But this particular Trinity Sunday also marked the Episcopal Visitation by Rt. Rev. James E. Curry, Bishop Suffragan of Connecticut, our annual Parish Picnic, a visit by the choir of the Presbyterian Church of Millerton, and the groundbreaking for the addition to our building that the Capital Campaign has been working on for nearly five years.

It was, truly, an historic day for us.

This page attempts to capture a few moments from Trinity Sunday, 2003.  Because so many did so much, inevitably portions of the day are omitted.  We apologize for this, and hope you will excuse the omission.

Rev. Long welcomes Bishop Curry to Trinity Lime Rock.
Our choir was joined by our friends, the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Millerton for the big day!  A highlight of their participation was the Offertory Anthem:  Alleluia (from "To Hope") by Dave Brubeck.

Ethan and the Bishop enter the church

The Bishop's Chaplain leads the Bishop into the Church before the Eucharist.  Previously, our organist, Christine Gevert, had performed J. S. Bach's Triple Fugue in E flat Major "The Trinity" in honor of Trinity Sunday.
With the Torchbearers ready, the procession began.

Procession to the construction site

At the conclusion of the Holy Eucharist, and following the Children's Homily by Bishop Curry (more about that later), the congregation left the Church in procession to the site of the future addition, singing the Recessional Hymn, The Church's One Foundation.

Marge Bethke reads

At the conclusion of the Litany, led by the Bishop, Marge Bethke, at 96 years old the eldest parishioner present that day, and a long-time advocate of additional space for the Sunday School, read from Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, and with all your might.  Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.  Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.  Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your  forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

The rubric:

During the singing of "Lord, you give the great commission", the people are invited to step inside the boundaries of the proposed building expansion while cross and torches walk the outer perimeter.

Then the Bishop says:

Since faithful people desire to build a house for learning, gathering and furthering the work of ministry for the glory of God on this ground, now marked with the symbol of Christ in the body of this faithful people;

Then taking the spade and breaking the ground the Bishop continues:

Therefore, I bless and break this ground for this building, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

May the Gospel be preached to young and old, may neighbors and strangers be welcomed, served and celebrated, and prayers and praised offered in this place, from generation to generation.  Amen.

V.  How wonderful is God in the holy places!

R. Establish, O God, what you have wrought for us.

V. Be favorable and gracious to Zion:

R. Build up the walls of Jerusalem.

O Lord God of Israel, the heavens cannot contain you, yet you are pleased to dwell in the midst of your people, and have moved us to set apart a space on which to build a house to work and learn, pray, celebrate and break bread together.  Accept and bless the work which we have now begun, that it may be brought to completion, to the honor and glory of your Holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Then, it being Trinity Sunday, we had our annual Parish Picnic!

Hayley and the Jesus doll Bishop Curry brought

Remember when we mentioned the Children's Homily? Well, Bishop Curry gives a Jesus doll to every parish he visits.  Each kid in the parish gets to keep the Jesus doll for a week, but has to take Jesus wherever they go.  Hayley's going to be the first at Trinity Lime Rock!
