Sports and Recreation at Trinity Lime Rock

Walking and Running for Exercise

at Trinity Lime Rock

Walk, Talk, Pray:  Each Friday a group usually led by Pastor Heidi assembles in our parking lot, and then, from 8 AM until 9 AM, the group walks and talks.

At present, the walk is a little over a mile along Dugway Road in the direction of Amesville and then return to Trinity.  The pace is faster than leisurely, but not really fast.  The conversation wanders all over the place -- from family, to church, to community, to nature -- and there's no script.  At the end of the walk, the participants gather in a circle for a moment of prayer -- and then it's on to our own activities of the day.

There's no charge for this; all are welcome; and there's no commitment to appear every Friday.  Plans are to continue walking on Dugway Road until the winter makes it unsafe or thoroughly unpleasant, and even in winter to take the road when road conditions permit.

Dogs are welcome! And they really seem to enjoy it, too!

When the weather is unpleasant or the road is unsafe, we have a great alternative venue.  The indoor track in the Mars Athletic Center at Hotchkiss School is available all mornings except Sunday and major holidays for walking or jogging from 8 AM to 10 AM, for a small charge.  This is under the auspices of the Salisbury Recreation Department on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for a charge of $2 per session, or on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays by the Sharon Recreation Department for a $3 charge.

So, frequently in the winter we walk, talk, and pray of Friday mornings at Hotchkiss along with our neighbors who are there on their own!  Sorry -- dogs aren't welcome on the Hotchkiss indoor track.

For those who wonder about the specifics of the indoor track at Hotchkiss, each lap is approximately 505 feet in length.  Therefore, it's:

10.5 laps = 1 mile

32.5 laps = 5000 meters (for those preparing for the Bishop's 5K for Kids or other 5K events)

Reid Field offers nearly nine flat acres of opportunity for Trinity, our parishioners, and our community.
Trinity participates in the annual Bishop's 5-K for Kids in West Hartford.

This road race (runners, walkers, and strollers all welcome) competes in the quiet residential streets of West Hartford

Trinity also participates in the annual CROP Walk -- at Housatonic Valley Regional High School each September.  This way to fight hunger and get a good workout is particularly popular with the kids.  Click HERE to see a page about our 2010 entry in that activity.

Emily DiMartino, our parishioner, recently won the gold medal in her event, the 5,000 meter walk, at the U. S. Kidney Foundation's 2008 Transplant Games, held 7/13/2008 - 7/14 /2008 at Carnegie Mellon University -- and encouraged the congregation to complete organ donor cards. Emily, by the way, is far from being the only Trinity parishioner who participates in running, jogging, and walking for fitness and enjoyment -- and, occasionally, for competition.
Thanks to Patrick Sullivan and the Lakeville Journal for a great page two article about Walk Talk Pray at Trinity!

Reid Field is a treasure for our parish and for our community.  As well as being a great place for walking, jogging and running, it's the venue for our summer sports program for young people.  (Click the thumbnail below to see a diagram of Reid Field.  You can see photos of Reid Field HERE.)

Property plan

If you would like to walk, or jog, or run around the mowed portion of Reid Field, here's a way of measuring your progress.

  • Start at the maroon Trinity sign at the entrance to the parking lot.  You'll see a small yellow-green flag at that point.

  • Stand next to the sign.  Now, walk, run, or jog about 320 feet along the edge of the field, along the tree line, headed north, parallel to Dugway Road.  You'll see another little flag.  Turn left, and continue counterclockwise around the rest of the mowed portion of Reid Field, continuing from flag to flag, and ending up back at the starting point.

  • The total measured distance in one lap around the mowed portion is approximately 1681 feet.  That converts to about 620 yards, 567 meters, or 0.35 miles.

Here's a rather shaky hand-held video of a walk around this circuit:

Thanks to our friends at Lime Rock Park for keeping Reid Field beautifully mowed!
